A lounge room will usually feature atleast one couch,an extra seating option, a rug, a coffee table, maybe a side table and a cabinet.

One important thing that you have remember about the placement of the couch is that i should be either completely on the rug, or else of teh rug. It shouldn’t be half on and half off it. Three seater sofa’s are the usual choice, and are good for movie watching.

Extra seat coud be an armchair, an ottoman or a window seat, but its colour should gel with the overall color scheme.

Feel free to put a rug over carpet, but rugs do look best on wooden floorboards. They’re comfy underfoot and soften the room. Pattern is fine in a minimalist room, but if you have stacks of furniture, walls of pictures and lots of colourful accessories, it’s best to stick to one colour in a rug. You can add interest by going for texture, as with this shag pile.

For aesthetics’ sake, keep he coffee table smaller than your couch and preferably centred in front of it.

A large piece of art hung above the mantel, or propped on the mantelpiece if you don’t want it hanging too high, is an ideal way to enhance the fireplace.

If you are going to have a TV in the living room it should be hidden in built-ins or armoires, depending on room style. TVs belong in a family room / den and even then they are best hidden.Place two pairs of throw pillows on the sofa, one pair with their points up, and they will create a vertical line to balance the other pieces of the same height in the room.

Place the sofa on the longest wall of the room; it’s an easy place to establish your focal point. Hanging a large painting or framed mirror above the sofa immediately draws attention to this area. If you are lucky enough to have both a fireplace and a spectacular view, the view should take precedence.

Since it’s a room for relaxation, you don’t want too much bright light at night. Lamps are definitely the way to go. Make yours easy to reach – in between the couch and side table (if not on the side table) is perfect, and if the head of the lamp is moveable, even better. This allows you to direct the light for reading, to show off your art or create ambience.

If you have a generous windowsill, place a few coloured glass vases or bottles on it so the light shines through and creates a pretty glow.

A bunch of flowers works wonders in a room, while candles create additional mood lighting and interest. For maximum impact, keep your side table as clutter-free as possible. Remotes are best stored in a box on the side table or coffee table.
