Berkeley Courtyard House in California by WA Design Inc

The walkways allow transparent views of the courtyard and roof lines accentuate the low concentration of the elements of the main building. Set perpendicular to the glass breezeway are two water features that appear to extend axially through the house and point out the view to the Bay Area. Hill punctuating the end of this axis of the water is an outdoor fireplace monolithic. Break the house into three separate units has allowed us to create three separate courses, both protected and open to an almost constant fog and onshore breezes of San Francisco Bay. The courtyard between the main house and guest house is adequately protected in the dusk comfortable eating much of the year. The exterior of the house is sheathed in alternating zinc shingles, recalling the artisan architecture a century earlier, or stucco. We designed steeply raked roof shed with deep eaves and delicate structural steel supports to give the home a distinctive look and provide outstanding outdoor protected area sufficient for the vast photovoltaic arrays that power the house.

The hardscape is minimalist white with concrete extending seamlessly inside the house and strips of granite stones set at the rate of the steel frame housing construction. The module construction of the house is literally met at the curb as you enter the first band of black granite cobblestones. Growth begins. Landscape plantings are set on a rack behind strict low retaining walls of Cor-ten steel and further extend the strong organization of the architecture of the building on the site.

Most internal walls are of raw or painted concrete and the ceilings, doors and other carpentry are predominately of oiled sawn oak with steel details; a rustic palette offset by smooth painted planes.

In a gesture of refinement and escape the kitchen and bathrooms enjoy marble surfaces suggestive of more habitable latitudes whereas the larder’s glazed white tiles and basalt shelves reminds of the need to stash food for harsh winters.

" the plant Home is centralized around a vertical ladder to minimize the movement of people and utilities. The rooms are left to spiral out of this core to take advantage of views and the garden. An external bridge that serves as a outdoor space also connects the garden of the house and solve the difficult problem of entering a house somewhere fairly steep uphill. All materials used are recycled or sustainable project, and in some cases, such as walls containment were rescued from the original foundation of the house. Electricity and hot water with solar energy, and there’s even a water recovery system is technologically complex ahead of the local building codes . "

The Architect describes the house as “a San Francisco house, where the main ideas expressed are transparency, sunlight, and a direct connection to nature”. Exteriors are defined by natural wood finish to keep with the ecological theme. The interiors of the house are well ventilated with wide windows that welcome the sunlight all day long. But there’s more to this house than just the wooden façade! Facets like photovoltaic panels, grass roof and a 25 ft bamboo tree growing through the center makes the house all the more eco-friendly.

Even the outside flooring is sans any varnish to retain that rustic earthy look.

The inside flooring in deep mahogany adds a warm appeal to the house and contrasts quite well with the white walls and window panels.

Minimal furnishing ensures wide and big spaces, ideal for eco homes. A small water body and green plants only compliments the home.

The house is not just black and white; it is beautifully green (in every sense)!

The natural setting of a beach home is what sets it different from other hotels, motels or guest houses. In fact beach homes are always associated with huge glass structures that are open yet private. An ensemble of natural rocks or wooden interiors with wide porches and open air terraces also lends a natural look to the place.
